Marine Science Field TripsMy Girl has been bringing students to Puget Sound to investigate its ecosystems. Marine Science Excursions are round-trip cruises, which begin in Lake Union/Tacoma and head to Puget Sound via the Ballard Locks or the Narrows Bridge. During these trips we expose students to Northwest local maritime History and study the ecosystem of Puget Sound using oceanography equipment to collect plankton and water samples. At the end of the day, we cast our otter trawl net and give students a chance to meet representatives of Puget Sounds Rocky Bottom Community face to face! |
The ProgramMarine Science Excursions aboard My Girl are designed to provide hands-on experience in marine biology, environmental science, oceanography, water chemistry, Fjord geology, boat handling, navigation, and Washington state history. Inside My Girl we have a microscope and microfiche biology lab for microscopic species identification, and an oceanography chemistry lab for testing water samples. On deck there are winches and rigging which students use to deploy and recover scientific equipment, as well as sorting trays in which students handle and identify the days bottom catch. Our goal is to re-create the atmosphere found aboard working research ships and to encourage students to take and active and meaningful roll in the days activities. Our instructors are experienced teaching all levels, from 4th grade to undergraduates (parents too!). And our curriculum is always tailored to each class. |
